Chou Shi Dan Cong – Fragrant Gardenia Phoenix Oolong

Our delightful Chou Shi Dan Cong comes from Chaoshan in China's Guangdong Province, a region famous for Dan Cong (Phoenix) oolongs. In Chaoshan, tea is served strong, fragrant and always gongfu-style! This Chou Shi Dan Cong is a special new style of oolong — very green, very fragrant and full of flavor.

"Chou Shi" means "dehydrate, " referring to its unique production method, which is similar to that of fragrant Anxi Tie Guan Yin. The leaves are picked by hand and, before any wilting, rolled briefly by hand and placed in a special dehydrator to stop the wilting process. This preserves the vibrancy of the large, twisted, incredibly aromatic bright green leaves.

Tasting Notes

  • Dry leaf: large, twisted, bright green leaves
  • Aroma: heady, perfumed gardenia
  • Flavor: rich and floral, similar to fine Anxi Tie Guan Yin
  • Character: bright, green and grassy with slight mineral notes
  • Finish: long, floral and fragrant

Why You'll Love It

Chou Shi Dan Cong combines the intense aroma Dan Cong is famous for with the fresh, green character of a lightly oxidized oolong. It's incredibly fragrant and flavorful — a wonderful discovery for floral oolong lovers.

How to Enjoy

Light, floral Dan Cong with creamy mouth feel. This is a nice light toasty tea perfect during the work day. I brew going fu style so I can get 8-10 steeps with short, 150ml steeps. I prefer to use 90C water. I recommend trying this tea for those who want to have a lighter tea without too much green tea grassiness.

This has become my favourite tea. I have loved high mountain oolongs for a long time but recently gave this a go after trying a Dan cong from another company but this one exceeded my expectations. It’s so green and light yet full of flavour and character. I love the colour of the leaves and it is my new all day drinker.

Very good tea, taste is on the floral side. I do reccomend.

However, this is more similar to a green tea, I wouldn't recommend this as a first Oolong, better to go for something like Tie Guan Yin if you want to try some Oolong
