Kukicha Kabuse – Sweet Japanese Gyokuro Twig Tea

Kukicha Kabuse is a fine Japanese green tea with a clean taste and a light, fresh green aroma. It's a karigane tea, meaning it's made from the stems and stalks left over from gyokuro production — parts that would otherwise be discarded. This clever tradition produces a unique and prized Japanese specialty known as "twig tea."

Because it comes from gyokuro, a top-grade shade-grown Japanese green tea that's sweet, mild and rich, Kukicha Kabuse inherits much of that luxurious character. It's theanine-rich, aromatic and brews a liquor in a beautiful shade of green, with a uniquely sweet and delicate flavor and no astringency at all.

Tasting Notes

  • Liquor: beautiful bright green
  • Aroma: light, fresh and green
  • Flavor: uniquely sweet and delicate
  • Character: clean, with no astringency
  • Finish: soft and refreshing

Why You'll Love It

Kukicha Kabuse is simple to brew and very forgiving, with a wide brewing range that works well at a variety of temperatures and over multiple infusions. It's naturally lower in caffeine than leaf teas and rich in theanine, making it a calm, gentle green tea for any time of day.

  • Made from gyokuro stems
  • Theanine-rich and aromatic
  • Sweet and delicate, never astringent
  • Easy to brew and forgiving

How to Enjoy

Enjoy it plain throughout the day, re-steeping for several cups. It's lovely with light meals, rice dishes and Japanese sweets, and makes a refreshing, gentle iced tea.

Sweet, clean and wonderfully easy to love, Kukicha Kabuse is a highly recommended Japanese green tea.

The l-theanine content is high and the caffeine is low. I'm mostly a gyokuro drinker, but this is the stems of gyokuro. Great stuff.

I'm not a tea connoisseur but what I can say is that this is my favourite green tea, hands down. It's beaten my old favourite - gyokuro gokou. It is not bitter, tastes smooth and I normally drink it by wanging 3 teaspoons in a 1L teapot with 1 teaspoon of whisked matcha powder. Boom, delish!
